From the 1980s until her passing in 2010, Virginia "Ginny" Valentine was an internationally recognized pioneer of semiotics. Among the first practitioners to bring semiotics to the field of market research in the UK, she set up Semiotics Solutions to provide training and technical development to others and won many awards for her dedicated work.
Ginny's success in her mission was not due to a lack of obstacles; rather, she exemplified a remarkable strength and bravery to go against the grain. Greg Rowlands, an original team member of Semiotics Solutions, explained that "Ginny was such an incandescent combination of drive, intellect and flamboyance...Semiotics was a challenging sell back in the early 90s, and without Ginny’s determination and sheer chutzpah, it would have remained a one-off commercial anomaly."
Ginny was also an avid supporters of others. She touched the lives of so many who remember her generous spirit and encouraging words. To honor her memory, Ginny's family thought it only fitting to continue her legacy of bravery and recognition in research. In 2012, in partnership with the Research Liberation Front, The Ginny Valentine Badge of Courage Awards were born.
Each year, we ask those within the market research industry to recognize their colleagues' brave acts through award nominations. These awards seek to honor those who challenge the status quo of market research. Whether your colleagues are pioneering new market-research methods, exploring underserved parts of the globe, placing themselves in challenging or dangerous situations, or simply pushing the boundaries of research, this is your chance to let them know that their work will not go unnoticed.
